Image
Buddhist simile: The tail of the snake Nature of pleasure and pain : Buddhist simile- Tail of the snake Dear friends, in this reading we will try to understand the true nature of pleasure and pain we encounter in our life using the Buddhist simile of ‘Tail of the snake’ The snake Snake is a venomous animal. It has two ends head and the tail. Head contain all the venom to harm another. The tail is harmless. The tow ends are very much different to each other. If we try to hold a snake on its head it will bit us. If we try to hold a snake on its tail, we can held it only for a short time. But if we hold it for a long time the snake will turn around and bit us Pleasure and pain – two ends of the snake We all look for pleasure and happiness in our life and try to avoid suffering and pain whenever possible. It is because we think by doing that we can be happy in life. Lord Buddha had explained, pleasure and pain are like the two ends of a snake. Pain is similar to the p...

Stilling the mind : Buddhist simile on cup (by Venerable Ajahn Brahm Thero)

Image
....…………………Buddhist simile on Cup………………… Stilling the mind : Buddhist simile on cup Meditation is about stilling the mind. Many meditators put all their effort to still their mind. But they become frustrated after many years of effort. A cup of juice is similar to our mind. When you hold the cup of juice although you focus, you being mindful, you being very skillful or put your all effort for many years still the juice in the cup will not come to stillness. To make it still there is only one way; that is to put down the cup. When you put it down and leave it there for a while the juice inside the cup will come to a perfect stillness. Similarly if you want to make your mind perfectly still you have to stop holding it. You have to stop making it still. You have to let it go, detach, and leave it alone then it will slowly become to a perfect stillness because that is the nature of our mind.

Buddhist simile : Roots of the tree and our mind

Image
The roots of the tree Buddhist simile : Roots of the tree and our mind Dear Friends, Have you ever closely looked at a tree? Tree with big branches, healthy leaves, beautiful flowers, delicious fruits. Yes we all like big trees which provide us shade. Does your focus always get in to the roots which hold the tree? Most of the time we only look at the tree the branches, leaves, flowers or fruits it bears. It is very hardly we think about the roots of the tree which provide nutrients, and held up the tree. Nutrients which is provided by the roots to the tree, keeps it alive. Therefore dear friends roots are the most important part of the tree. All of us are like a tree with roots. The trunk, branches, leaves, fruits are similar to our body, our words, our deeds, and our sense of sight, hearing, smell, taste and feelings. These get nourished by the mind of us (like the roots of the tree). If the roots nourish the tree with plenty of necessary nutrients, i...

The river and life

Image
Buddhist Simile : The river The river and life : Buddhist simile River flowing swiftly downhill Rivers, flow down lands with purified water. They make the most beautiful view. I like to sit by a river bank watching her beauty flowing swiftly down the hill. Unwise thoughts The nature of the river is to flow down the hill.   If I am unwise I might think this river should flow uphill. But that will never happen. My thinking is wrong. If I keep on thinking ‘the river should flow uphill ’l I will never find peace and happiness. We never think a river should uphill because we know it is impossible. It is very much unwise of me/you to think that river should flow uphill. My unwise way of thinking will destroy my happiness and peace within me. River and life There are 8 forms of realities we encounter in our life. That is; Birth, illness, death, aging, sad, lamentation, parting from loved one, accompanied by people we do not like. Similar to the fact that ...

A pilgrimage to Nibbana : Buddhist simile-The lost wallet

Image
The lost wallet A pilgrimage to Nibbana : Buddhist simile A beautiful morning It was a beautiful sunny morning. Rays of sun enters the earth through blue clouds. These golden rays blew life to earth. The flower buds blossom to pretty flowers. Little birds are chirping making the heavenly harmony.     A nice cool breeze comes through my window and whisper to my ears. I can hear the voice of my Father ‘it is the time to wake up’. My room is filled up with the fragrance of flowers. Beyond that my mind caught the smell of the tastiest food of my mother. I can hear the sound of my favorite tea getting ready by my mother.   It is the time to go to work. I left my home and got in to the bus. It was a 1 hour bus ride. Went to my working place. The day pass by peacefully. I did my duties and start heading back home. When I have to pay for my bus ride I look for my wallet. I suddenly realize I have lost my wallet. Might be I have lost it in the morning on my...
